Signs of spring are coming.. (a little too early this year, but that's another topic entirely).. In case you missed it, notice the abundance of tulips in every grocery store near you..It's about this time of the year every year that I start to feel sluggish, heavy, and a little down. I have to remind myself, EVERY FEB/MARCH that I always feel like this at this time of the year. This isn't going to be my permanent state, so there is no need to worry. What helps me (other than my annual trip to a sunny location??;)? Our metabolism slows in the winter, and we are often drawn to heavier foods and staying cosy inside more and this just builds up as the cold months advance into what we would call a kapha imbalance. Kapha dosha is a combination of the water and earth elements. It is responsible for the lubrication and cohesion in the body. Its gunas (qualities) are heavy, slow/dull, cold, oily, liquid, smooth, dense, soft, static, sticky, cloudy, and gross.. Sound a bit like how you feel right now? Does it seem these qualities have built up over the last months? I hear ya sister. What to do get out of this ICK feeling (other than a trip to the tropics;?) Like increases like and opposites balance one another. The opposite of heavy, cold, static and cloudy is light, warm, moving and clear. :) This says to me - heat things up and lighten things up.
I just went to a sweaty hot yoga class. Later this week I head to the sauna. I also add more spices to kick up my metabolism -- curry, ginger or peppers are great for that. We can also kick up our exercise routine up a notch and add in more jumpy postures, one breath one movement flows, sun salutations into our yoga postures, or do some cardio to mix it up (I love running and kick boxing). Luckily, our bodies are pretty smart and are already sensing the shift in temperature and craving to lighten things up and let go of the stagnant energy building from the fall. Want to learn more?
