Happy (Real) Birthday George Washington!
The answer to this one is obvious - but here's our HistoryPlunge Baseline question of the day:
What one person was the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, presided over the Constitutional Convention, and was the first President of the United States? The answer is, of course, George Washington.
Here are a few things you might not know:
When George Washington became President, there were already 11 states in the Union -- and 5 more joined during his presidency: North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, Kentucky and Tennessee.
George Washington was the only President not to be affiliated with a political party.
Do you know the city (which was then the U.S. capital) where he took the oath of office? If so, let us know in the comments or take the quiz in our story!
The image in our post is a card from the game HistoryPlunge. The image is from a portrait in the collection at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. The artist was Gilbert Stuart. The portrait is oil on canvas, painted in 1796. The Smithsonian acquired it as a gift to the nation through the generosity of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.
